Philanthropy

Miles for Medals is our annual fall philanthropy event, instated by brother Zachary Franklin (Alpha Theta) in the fall of 2010.

Overview: In conjunction with the Rho Chi FIJI chapter at the University of Richmond, the game football (Dukes vs. Spiders) is run in a relay fashion between the two stadiums, covering a distance of 120 miles.  The entire run is police-escorted.  The event raises funds for Special Olympics Virginia, supporting its athletes who remind us that anyone can accomplish great things if only given the chance.

Logistics:

  • Running begins two days before the game on a Thursday morning at the away team’s stadium, ending later that evening in Louisa, VA (halfway point)
  • Friday morning, a handoff in Louisa takes place, where the home team runs the rest of the way to their stadium

News:

  • In the two years of Miles for Medals, FIJI has raised over $25,000 for Special Olympics
  • In 2010, Miles for Medals won the Fraternity/Sorority Life award for Outstanding Philanthropy, an incredible feat for a first year event.  Click here to read an article from The Breeze about Miles for Medals.
  • Miles for Medals 2011 took place just recently on October 1st, JMU’s homecoming game.  In partnership with the sorority Alpha Sigma Alpha (ASA), the event was another huge success, ending with an on-field presentation of the game ball to the referees at the 21:00 minute mark.
